About Me

My name is Mary H. Edwards. I have been teaching twenty-four years, with this year being my seventh year in the Alief School district.

I received my Bachelor of Arts degree in the area of Vocal Music Education in 1991 and I received my Masters of Music in the area of Choral Conducting in 2004, both from the University of New Orleans.

I am certified in Music Education K-12 and ESL EC-12.

I am originally from New Orleans, Louisiana. I now reside in Houston, Texas with my daughter.

I am the Choir teacher at Miller and my curriculum includes Honor Choir, Handbells, and Orff Ensemble. I incorporate Orff & Kodaly techniques into my music curriculum.

I believe students should have a thorough foundation in choir, which includes vocal training, quality repertoire, and music reading, writing, and improvisational skills.  These foundation skills will enable students to become trained performers, use critical thinking and problem-solving skills , and  express themselves  creatively.   The Kodaly method uses these skills to contribute to the emotional, intellectual, aesthetic and physical development of the  child, to provide the necessary tools to help in achieving their full potential in music.

It is an honor for me to teach at Miller, and my aim is to transfer the passion I have for music to the students. I teach music, not because I expect the students to sing or play music all their lives; but so they will recognize the beauty in music and strive for excellence in all areas of their lives.
